Have you spent years wondering why it seems harder for you to focus, stay organized, follow through, manage time, or keep up with everything you know you should be able to do?
Maybe you have been successful on the outside, but underneath it takes an enormous amount of effort to keep everything together.
Or perhaps you have been told that you are anxious, overwhelmed, unmotivated, scattered, overly sensitive, or simply need to “try harder”, but those explanations have never fully captured your experience.
An adult ADHD assessment can help clarify whether ADHD may be contributing to the patterns you have been experiencing and, just as importantly, whether something else may better explain them.
I provide ADHD testing and diagnostic evaluations for adults in Irvine, Orange County, and virtually throughout California.
My goal is not simply to give you a label. The goal is to help you better understand how your mind works, identify what may be interfering with your functioning, and provide practical recommendations for moving forward.
Adults often seek an ADHD evaluation because they experience difficulties such as:
Many adults with ADHD were never identified as children.
Some performed well academically because they were intelligent, highly driven, anxious about failure, or developed ways of compensating for their difficulties.
For others, symptoms become much more noticeable when life becomes more complicated; graduate school, demanding careers, relationships, parenting, running a business, or managing multiple responsibilities at once.
Throughout my work as a clinical psychologist, I have worked with adults experiencing ADHD symptoms alongside anxiety, depression, trauma, perfectionism, burnout, relationship difficulties, and chronic feelings of not living up to their potential.
What I have found especially meaningful is helping people make sense of experiences they may have spent years criticizing themselves for.
Many highly capable adults come into therapy understanding themselves intellectually but still wondering:
“Why is it so hard for me to actually do the things I know I need to do?”
That question is one of the reasons I became increasingly interested in psychological assessment and diagnostic clarification.
ADHD does not always look like someone who cannot sit still or pay attention. In adults, it can look like overthinking, chronic procrastination, constantly feeling behind, needing pressure to perform, forgetting everyday tasks, emotional exhaustion, difficulty regulating attention, or alternating between hyperfocus and complete avoidance.
My clinical approach is thoughtful and individualized. I look beyond a checklist of symptoms and consider the whole person - developmental history, relationships, work and school functioning, emotional health, stress, sleep, trauma history, and other factors that can mimic or intensify ADHD symptoms.
The purpose of the evaluation is to understand what is actually happening, rather than trying to force your experience into a diagnosis.
A comprehensive adult ADHD evaluation typically includes several components.
We will discuss your current concerns as well as your developmental, educational, occupational, relationship, medical, and mental health history.
Because ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, understanding patterns that may have been present earlier in life is an important part of the assessment.
You will complete research-based psychological measures designed to evaluate symptoms commonly associated with adult ADHD.
When appropriate, a parent, partner, family member, or another person who knows you well may also be asked to complete an observer questionnaire.
Many adults do not remember exactly what they were like at age eight or ten.
We may explore childhood functioning through:
You do not need to have old report cards or childhood records to pursue an evaluation.
One of the most important parts of an ADHD evaluation is determining whether your symptoms are actually caused by ADHD.
Difficulty concentrating can also occur with:
It is also possible for ADHD to occur alongside one or more of these conditions.
A thoughtful evaluation considers these possibilities rather than relying solely on an ADHD questionnaire.

Once the assessment is completed, we will meet to discuss the findings.
I will explain what the results suggest, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations based on your particular situation.
Whether or not you ultimately meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD, the goal is for you to leave the evaluation with a clearer understanding of yourself.
Your evaluation may include a written report summarizing:
With your written authorization, results can also be coordinated with your psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, physician, or therapist when clinically appropriate.
A comprehensive ADHD diagnostic evaluation considers symptoms across time and across different areas of your life.
The question is not simply:
“Do I have trouble concentrating?”
It is also:
Why?
Understanding the reason matters because anxiety, trauma, depression, sleep deprivation, chronic stress, autism, ADHD, and other conditions can sometimes produce remarkably similar symptoms.
Good psychological assessment involves putting those pieces together.
One population I am particularly interested in working with is adults who appear highly functional but feel like maintaining that level of functioning requires an exhausting amount of effort.
You may have earned advanced degrees, built a career, maintained relationships, or accomplished a great deal while privately struggling with organization, procrastination, overwhelm, motivation, or emotional regulation.
Success does not automatically rule out ADHD.
Some adults develop sophisticated ways of compensating for attention and executive-functioning difficulties.
Eventually, however, those strategies can become difficult to maintain.
This often becomes especially noticeable during periods of increased responsibility, career advancement, graduate education, parenthood, relationship transitions, or burnout.
ADHD and anxiety commonly overlap.
Sometimes anxiety develops partly because a person has spent years worrying about forgetting something, disappointing someone, falling behind, or making a mistake.
Other times, anxiety itself is contributing to attention difficulties.
And sometimes both are present.
Part of a comprehensive adult ADHD assessment is determining how these different patterns interact rather than assuming every problem with concentration is ADHD.

Receiving a diagnosis does not mean that something is wrong with you.
For many adults, understanding ADHD provides a framework for patterns that previously felt confusing or personal.

The most useful recommendations are the ones that fit the person rather than simply the diagnosis.
